Huobi Global exchange is one of the oldest and most reputable crypto trading platforms in the world. It also ranks highly among the most diversified crypto trading platforms. The exchange provides users with a wide range of digital assets and avails such other crypto-related services as a digital wallet, crypto mining pool, an earning and investment platform, and cloud storage services for other exchanges.

Like equally popular crypto exchanges, it has also developed a crypto coin native to the exchange – Huobi Token (HT). The crypto exchange is highly innovative, integrates some of the most popular crypto trading and market analysis tools, and embraces industry-standard security features around the platform.

Pros & Cons

We will start by tabulating some of the pros and cons of using the platform in the table below, after which we will explain each in detail.

Advantages of Huobi Global

  • Huobi maintains a User Protection Fund
  • Highly responsive customer support available 24/7
  • It gives you access to a wide range of crypto and tokens
  • It is available on both desktop and Mobile
  • Allows derivatives trading – futures and swaps

Disadvantages of Huobi Global

  • Huobi is not a regulated exchange
  • It was in the past accused of falsifying trading volumes
  • Huobi Global was accused of investing client funds without their consent
  • Requires identity verification
  • It maintains low margins for leveraged trades

Pros

User protection fund: Huobi global maintains a user protection fund – some form of internal insurance scheme – that is aimed at protecting user funds from thefts and hacks. To fund the insurance pool, Huobi is regularly funneling portions of its profits to the fund. This insurance policy is similar to Binance’s SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) and will be used to indemnify Huobi wallet users in case of losses occasioned by security breaches.

Responsive customer support: Both the Huobi desktop trading platform and the mobile app trader have the chat feature that you can use to contact the Huobi customer support team. The team is available 24/7, and the average response time on either platform is less than one hour.

Wide range of altcoins: Huobi exposes crypto traders to more than 300 cryptocurrencies and tokens and an equally large number of trading pairs and crosses.

Multiple trading platforms: Huobi crypto exchange users have the option of choosing between the desktop trading platform available for both Windows and macOS or the mobile trading platform available on both Android and iOS devices

Derivative trading: Like most other world-leading crypto exchanges, Huobi recently introduced derivatives trading features. Today, crypto investors on the platform are free to trade such derivatives as Futures, margined swaps, and options.

Cons

Huobi isn’t regulated: Unlike equally popular exchanges like the Coinbase crypto trading broker and Kraken which are regulated and licensed by leading finance regulatory agencies in the world, Huobi global exchange is not regulated. The exchange nevertheless introduced a regulated over-the-counter trading platform for the fiat to crypto exchanges – Huobi OTC Desk – and has signaled its interest in entering the US market, which requires that all crypto service providers be regulated.

Falsifying trading volumes: On March 10, 2018, Sylvain Ribes published a study “Chasing Fake Volumes: A Crypto Plaque,” in which he argues that as much as 81.8% of the trading volumes reported by Huobi exchange is made up. The Huobi platform founder and CEO – Leon Li – has, however, went ahead and rubbished these claims.

Investing user funds without consent: In August 2017, Xinhua News Agency, a Chinese newswire revealed that Huobi and OKCoin, the two largest Crypto exchanges in China – had invested as much as 1 Billion Yuan ($150 Million) of ‘idle’ client funds in high-risk-high-yield “Wealth Management Products” without explicit consent from the clients. This forced the Peoples Bank of China to intervene and issue warnings against Huobi and OKCoin exchanges.

Identity verification: Huobi claims that you do not need to verify your identity to exchange cryptocurrencies on their platform. But it also imposes restrictions on transaction and withdrawal limits for unverified users making it virtually impossible for a regular user to use the platform without passing the KYC and AML processes.

Low margins for leveraged trades: While Huobi recently introduced leveraged margin trading for their platform users, the margin levels offered on the platform are dwarfed by the leverage levels provided by its competitors. For instance, while Bitmex and Binance offer leverages of up to 100X and 20X respectively, the maximum leverage on Huobi is 3X.

Regulations, Offices & Supported Countries:

Regulation

Huobi Global exchange is not regulated. But their subsidiary – the Huobi OTC Desk is fully regulated and licensed by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission. Here, it operates under the DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) license issued by Gibraltar FSC.

List of Coins and Crosses

According to the Huobi Global website, Huobi Exchange supports 312 cryptocurrencies, tokens, and stablecoins. It also presents you with an unlimited number of crypto-to-crypto crosses. Note, however, that unlike such highly versatile crypto exchange platforms like Changelly that allow you to exchange one crypto for virtually any other crypto, Huobi lists several major coins that can be used as the base rate and traded against the rest of the cryptocurrencies and tokens. Nevertheless, the exchange regularly updates this list by introducing more crypto pairs and eliminating others. We list below all the supported coins and their short codes on the Huobi exchange for easier identification;

Crypto Crosses at Huobi

Huobi Global exchange has six base currencies: USDT, HUSD, BTC, ETH, HT, and ALTS. USDT, HUSD, and BTC can be exchanged for virtually any other currency supported on the platform. Currently, the only altcoins (ALTS) that can be traded on the platform are the BTT/TRX pair.

Crypto Crosses at Houbi

Keep in mind that Huobi Global is regularly updating the supported crosses on its platform by adding liquid and popular cryptocurrencies/tokens and removing underperforming coins. You are advised to constantly check the Huobi Blog or their GitHub repository for news on added/removed crypto crosses.

Crypto to Fiat exchange at Huobi

As we mentioned earlier, Huobi recently introduced the Huobi OTC Desk – the highly regulated arm of Huobi crypto exchange that supports crypto to fiat conversions. Here, you can purchase a wide range of crypto using the supported fiat currencies. They have also featured a ‘Buy Crypto’ tab on the exchange website where you can buy crypto using fiat or sell crypto for fiat quickly and without leaving the platform.

Currently, Huobi has a VISA card as the only supported payment processing method on the Buy Crypto section for the crypto selling page. The service is, however, not universal and is only available in a limited number of countries. We must also add that the number of supported currencies will also vary from one country/region to another.

Trading Platforms, Account Opening & How to Buy Crypto:

Huobi Global Desktop Trading Platform:

Huobi Global maintains a highly sophisticated desktop trading platform. It is highly intuitive, with most of its features carefully placed on the site’s display for easy navigation. And while a little experience with similar trading exchanges can go along in easing your transition onto the platform, you don’t need to be a crypto trading expert to interact with the Huobi Global desktop trading platform. It is quite beginner-friendly. Plus, on the website is a stack of educational resources that you can use to learn how to navigate the platform and interact with most of its features.

The Huobi global desktop trading platform is also feature-rich and hosts a wide range of trading and market analysis tools. These include the order book, charting tools, market trends, and risk management tools that you can use to monitor the markets and manage your trades in real-time. Transaction processing speeds on the platform are also relatively fast, with zero slippage.

The process of registering for a user account on the platform is also straightforward. For starters, the company will only ask for your email and phone number when completing your user profile. And you can start trading crypto immediately. Further, the process of verifying the identity of users that either wants to Buy crypto using fiat on the platform or expand their trading limits is also straightforward and fast. It only takes a few hours to the next day to verify your identity and lift the trading limits.

Here is a screengrab of the Huobi Global desktop trading platform. We explain the key features captured here below:

Huobi Global Desktop Trading Platform

Buy Crypto

The Buy Crypto tab presents Huobi desktop trading platform users with four quick trading options; the buy, sell, convert, and P2P market. The buy section of the webpage makes it possible for verified Huobi Global users to purchase popular cryptocurrencies and tokens using the fiat currencies. It essentially simplifies the crypto purchase program by making it possible to buy crypto without necessarily leaving the platform for Huobi OTC Desk. Similarly, the Sell option, on the other hand, makes it possible for you to sell your crypto for fiat without leaving the Huobi Global platform.

Huobi Global Desktop Trading Platform

You can also use the ‘Convert’ tab to exchange one type of crypto for another at highly competitive prices. The P2P Market, on the other hand, is a peer-to-peer marketplace for Huobi Users that are looking to bypass the complexities of the trading platform and the long wait on the order book. Here, you are allowed to create a trade by listing the coin you are looking to sell, set your selling price, and preferred payment method.

Huobi Global Desktop Trading Platform

Markets

The Market section of the Huobi Global desktop platform comes in handy for users looking to monitor the price of all the supported coins, tokens, and other featured items in real-time. It has the FAV tab that lets you create a customized list of the coins and tokens you would like to monitor and the HB10 Index that monitors the real-time price performance of 10 coins listed on Huobi. These are handpicked by Huobi Global managers to reflect the platform’s performance as they have the highest market value and better circulation.

Huobi Global Desktop Trading Platform

It also features the exchange tab that you can use to view the exchange price of all the supported coins on the Huobi Global platform. It is a dashboard that outlines the pair’s last price, the percentage change in price, its highest and lowest price levels, and the trading volumes. It also features the price trend section on the far right that outlines the top gaining pair, the newest listed pair, and trading volume leaders.

Huobi Global Desktop Trading Platform

Next to the exchange is the Futures tab that outlines the price changes for the margined trades. These are broken into Coin-margined swaps and USDT-Margined swaps, and like the exchange tab, outlines their price-performance starting with the last price, percentage change, highest and lowest price levels, open interest, and trade volumes.

Spot trading: Exchange, Margin, Brokerage (OTC)

The Spot trading tab features the trading arm of the Huobi Global desktop platform. It has both exchange and margin-trading sections that you can use to monitor the crypto markets by looking at the price trends of individual cryptocurrencies, monitor the crypto order book, view all open orders, and manage risks. The only difference between the exchange and Margin sections is that while the exchange details the raw price of all crypto listed with the Huobi exchange, the Margin tab will only list the price of crypto that can be traded with leveraged funds.

In addition to the two is the Brokerage(OTC) option that redirects you to the regulated fiat-to-crypto trading arm of Huobi exchange. Here, you can exchange fiat for crypto using the Huobi brokerage desk and vice versa. However, you must be first subjected to identity verification – the KYC and AML – protocols before using the platform.

Derivatives: Futures, Swaps, Options

The Derivatives tab is quite similar to the spot trading tab, in that they both are the trading arms of the Huobi exchange. But while spot trading deals with cryptocurrencies, tokens, and fiat currencies, Derivatives lists the values of the crypto derivatives like futures, options contracts, and swaps. And just like the Derivatives and the Spot Trading arms of Huobi exchange, they all outline the real-time price of the different tradable products, the order book, open order section that lets you view all your open orders, and the risk management sections.

Wealth management: Mining, Savings, lending asset custody, asset servicing

The Wealth Management section of the website is the investing and earning arm of the Huobi Global Exchange. It has multiple sections that include Locking & mining, C2C lending, Asset custody, asset servicing, Savings, Buy HUSD, and Pool Savings.

Wealth management: Mining, Savings, lending asset custody, asset servicing

The C2C lending platform is the Huobi Global exchange’s lending arm that lets its users profit from loaning their digital assets to other Huobi users for a limited amount of time. It allows you to borrow either USDT or BTC from other Huobi Global platform users for a maximum of 30 days at a daily interest rate of between 0.01% and 0.098%.

The Savings platform allows you to save your digital assets and earn a guaranteed interest rate. The platform is open to all Huobi clients and supports either BTC or Tether(USDT). However, the interest is variable and is updated daily (it currently stands at 7.00% APR for USDT and 3.5% APR for BTC). Huobi Global doesn’t lock your funds, and you are free to redeem your earnings or withdraw the savings at any time and without issuing prior notice.

Wealth management: Mining, Savings, lending asset custody, asset servicing

Buy HUSD option is an appreciation of the highly volatile crypto markets and was born of the need to protect Huobi Global exchange users from falling victim to uncontrolled price volatilities. HUSD is an ERC-20 stablecoin developed by Huobi exchange and whose value is pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar. Buying HUSD comes in handy during periods of extreme downside market volatility as it helps you preserve the value of your assets. The process of buying HUSD is relatively easy and straightforward. Plus, you can invest in several third-party DeFi platforms and earn interest.

Wealth management: Mining, Savings, lending asset custody, asset servicing

The Huobi Global Asset Custody service offers custodial services to both individual Huobi clients and institutions. According to Huobi Global website, the Asset custody is ideally meant to provide ‘Safe and more professional’ storage services for their clients. It is a premium and voluntary service where you are required to apply by submitting the intention for custody. One of its minimal requirements is that you must have above 10 Bitcoins. Here is a table showing the custody fees for different amounts of BTC.

Accumulated Custody asset (BTC or equivalent)Annualized fee rate (50% off for a limited time)
≥ 101%
≥ 1000.8%
≥ 5000.6%
≥ 10000.4%

Order Book

The order book is an integral part of virtually all the trading pages of Huobi Global, especially the Spot Trading and Derivatives sections. It appears next to the charts and features the “Buy Orders” that list the prices different clients are willing to buy a particular asset and the “Sell Orders” that list the prices that different sellers are willing to dispose of their crypto assets. On both buy and sell sides, the order book lists the price of the coin, the amount to buy/sell, and the total value of the trade.

Wealth management: Mining, Savings, lending asset custody, asset servicing

Order history

The order history tab is located at the bottom of the spot trading and derivatives trading windows and outlines all your closed trades. It lists the coins you have opened in the past and comes in handy in helping you understand your trading history.

Risk management

The risk management tools available to Huobi Global desktop platform users include the limit, stop limit, and trigger order. They are all located immediately below the chart on both spot trading and derivatives trading windows. The limit here allows you to place a limit price at which the buy/sell order can be executed. On the other hand, the stop-limit order – also known as the stop price – lets you set the price at which the platform will automatically close or enter into a trade. The difference between the limit and stop-limit order is that the limit is visible to the market while the stop loss is invisible. The trigger order is automation that lets you set the price that, if triggered, allows the platform to place your order.

Risk Management at Huobi

Open orders

The Open order tab sits next to the order history tab at the bottom of the trading window and outlines all your open orders. It highlights such information as the crypto trading pair, the trading side (buy/sell), the price, the total amount, and the trigger condition, and an indication of whether it is executed or in the queue. The tab lets you monitor all your trading activity in real-time and simplifies the process of pausing and closing trades.

How to open a user account on Huobi desktop exchange

Huobi Global maintains one of the easiest and most straightforward user registration processes. We break it down in the step-by-step guide below:

  1. On your browser, open www.huobi.com
  2. Click on the “Sign Up” button on the top right side of the website

These include the Help center, the knowledge base, the guide section, the derivatives academy, and the Huobi blog. The Huobi help center is the most elaborate education section of the website as it combines the Huobi Global Knowledge base and FAQs page. Prominently featured on every help center web page is the search bar that users can use to search for different terms on the website. It then outlines basic information about the website, the trading platform, and the mobile app. It addresses all the common challenges faced by most Huobi Global platform users and shares useful troubleshooting guides.

What are people saying about Huobi on Reddit?

Overall, Reddit users are quite content with Huobi Global exchange, with most of them vouching for its legitimacy. Some of Huobi Global features that most of these Reddit users are especially satisfied with include the brand’s responsive customer support, seamless transactions, and its global presence. Nevertheless, we also came across two significant user concerns about the platform. One has to do with transactions that don’t meet the minimum trading limit, and the other addresses the use of Bots. In the case of minimum trade limits, we came across several Reddit users who complained that Huobi Global permanently withheld their coins when they tried entering a trade with insufficient coins, as indicated in the image below.

Huobi on Reddit

One Reddit user rekindles the faked trading volumes issue arguing that Huobi Global seems to overuse bots on their platforms. He is, however, quick to add that it poses no problem to the clients as it doesn’t affect their trades, adding that the trend has taken root in the industry with a significant number of exchanges using crypto bots.

What are people saying about Huobi on Quora?

There is little chatter about Huobi Global exchange or its services on Quora – which we consider a good thing. We would even be more optimistic and say that this probably signifies a carryover of the goodwill expressed by most Huobi Global exchange users on Reddit. Most of the discussions around the platform on Quora mill involve comparing it to other exchanges and inquiries about the best cryptocurrencies to buy on the platform. We didn’t come across any negative comments about Huobi Global exchange on Quora.

Is Huobi exchange safe?

Well, Huobi Global exchange developers have put in place several highly advanced security measures that guarantee the integrity of their platform and the safety of their client’s digital assets. And it all starts with ensuring that virtually all the platform users are subjected to the industry standard KYC and AML procedures to verify their identity. It then boosts this with such additional security features as absolute control over their private keys, ensuring that Huobi wallets have the multi-signature functionality and are highly encrypted.

Huobi vs. eToro:

Huobi Global and the eToro social trading platforms are two of the most popular crypto exchanges in the world today. They share a wide range of cryptocurrencies and tokens including the fact that they are available both as a web trader and a mobile app. They have also integrated several highly advanced trading features and analytics that go a long way in helping platform users interact with the platforms and the crypto markets. The two also share several contrasts.

We compare and contrast some of their key features – integrated features, security, and customer support – below.

Integrated features:

Both the Binance Crypto Trading exchange and eToro support a wide range of trading instruments that range from cryptocurrencies to crypto derivatives and leveraged crypto trades. They also support the purchase of crypto using credit cards and integrate highly advanced trading/market analysis tools like professional market charts and risk management controls.

Given that it operates outside of most crypto-industry regulations, Huobi has been able to offer leverages of up to 75X. This is much higher than the 5X leverage offered by eToro in Europe. However, eToro takes the day with its revolutionary social trading platform that features social trading, copy trading, and copy portfolios. This makes it possible for Bitcoin traders on eToro to earn why they learn to trade – making it interactive and more beginner-friendly.

Security:

Both Binance and eToro have gone out of their way in making their crypto trading platforms secure. They both have the password as the primary deterrence against unauthorized access to the user account. The two also encourage users to activate two-factor authentication via either their phone number or email address. More importantly, they have integrated enterprise-grade tools to encrypt their platform user’s personal information.

eToro, however, takes this a notch higher by registering with multiple financial regulatory authorities across the world. It also subjects itself to oversight by some of the most reputable finance regulators like the FCA, CySEC, and AISC. Note also that eToro crypto wallets are also custodial – storing your Bitcoin and other cryptos in highly secure offline vaults. Importantly, eToro has started insuring their client accounts (starting with the UK and Australia) with policy covers of up to $1 million.

Customer support:

Both Binance and eToro can be said to maintain highly responsive customer support teams. Responses to customer queries and complaints by either platform are quick and qualified. On eToro, you can also join the subscription program, eToro Club, which presents you with more ways of contacting support including live chat, callbacks, and invitations to exclusive events.
